Heart failure

Heart failure is caused by conditions that impair the heart's ability to fill with or pump out enough blood. In some patients, either side of the heart or both sides may be affected. Pressure builds up in the failing right ventricle, then moves to the right atrium and back to the systemic veins in right-sided heart failure. Jugular venous distention and peripheral edoema are clinical signs. Preexisting left-sided heart failure is the most common cause of right-sided heart failure. Pressure begins to build in the left ventricle, then moves to the left atrium and into the lungs in left-sided heart failure. Pulmonary edoema and shortness of breath are two clinical signs. The most common cause of left-sided heart failure is myocardial infarction.
